World Alcohol Consumption
 | US alcohol consumption per
capita in liters per year increased from 6.7 in 1993 to to 6.8 in 1995, which is 1.8
gallons or 230 ounces of pure alcohol per capita per year and 61 billion ounces total.

| 117 million drinking
Americans consumed an average of 521 ounces per year or 1.43 per day in 1995 which is
enough alcohol to keep the BAC (blood alcohol content)
of each of those drinking Americans above 0.08 every day for 365 days per year.

| A fatal accident in the US is
defined as "alcohol-related" if anyone in the accident had a BAC greater than
0.01.
|
| Frenchmen consume 70% more
alcohol and Australians consume 12% more alcohol than Americans and their men have,
respectively, a 1.8 year and 4.2 year longer life expectancy
than American men.

| Compared to the US, both
men's life expectancy and alcohol consumption are higher in Luxembourg, France, Spain,
Denmark, Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Ireland, Belgium, Greece, Italy, Netherlands,
Cyprus, Australia, the United Kingdom, and New Zealand.

| The current level of alcohol consumption saves 80,000 lives per year from heart disease
but the decrease in consumption since 1980 increased heart disease deaths by 35,000/year.

Between 1960 and 1981, the world consumption of alcohol grew rapidly from 25% to
243% (in percent of alcohol), especially in the United States, Germany, Russia, Japan,
United Kingdom, Spain, Holland (where consumption during this period increased from 2.8 to
9.4), Ireland, Hungary, Belgium, Denmark, Austria, Canada, Finland. Paradoxically, France
is one of the rare countries where the level of consumption of pure alcohol, after a short
period of stabilisation, has tended to diminish since the 1960s from 17.7 to 11.4 in 1994.
The table of alcohol consumption (below) shows that in 1993 six
countries out of 32 had a level of consumption over 10 litres, considered to be a level of
risk, against 5 countries in 1994. Overall, the level of consumption is tending to
stabilise in most countries. Consumption of pure alcohol in Europe and some other
