Paraphrased from today's Globe and Mail (Toronto ON):
Dr. Showalter is a professor of English and the humanities at Princeton. She has
written:
"Hystories: Hysterical Epidemics and Modern Media (Columbia U. Press)
in which she contends that "hysteria not only survives in the 1990s, it is more
contagious than in the past. The book focuses on 6 modern afflictions: chronic
fatigue, Persian Gulf war related illness, tales of alien abduction, MPD,
recovered memories and Satanic ritual abuse.
The "Chronicle of Higher Education" mentioned that her claims have attracted
critics. Her friend, Joyce Carol Oates, has warned her not to do a book tour.
"She thinks I'll be assassinated," Dr Showalter joked.

I looked up the book on the Amazon virtual book store (www.amazon.com). It is
224 pages and is available as hardcover at a list price of $24.94 and a
discounted price of $19.96. This book store allows readers to post their own
opinions of the books. This book received an unpredicented (in my experience)
number of responses, from sufferers and experts in the chronic fatigue and Gulf
War syndrome. No negative or positive responses from SRA, RMT, UFO, MPD true
believers.
The book has the following chapters:
Acknowledgments
1. The Hysterical Hot Zone
2. Defining Hysteria
3. The History of Hysteria: The Great Doctors
4. Politics, Patients, and Feminism
5. Hysterical Men
6. Hysterical Narratives
7. Hysteria and the Histrionic
8. Chronic Fatigue Syndrome
9. Gulf War Syndrome
10. Recovered Memory
11. Multiple Personality Syndrome
12. Satanic Ritual Abuse
