Strong's Concordanc defines the Greek word "diakatelegchomai" as "confute", which Webster's dictionary defines as "disprove, to make useless".

Yet the King James translators defined it to mean "convinced".

Consider the differences between the following two possibilities:

"For he mightily convinced the Jews, and that publicly, showing by the Scriptures that Jesus was Christ".

and:

"For he mightily disproved the Jews, and that publicly, showing by the Scriptures that Jesus was Christ".

Why would King James translators take a passage which shows that the Apostle Paul publicly embarrased the jews by proving that they were wrong and make it seem that he merely "convinced" them [in public]?

This is an EGREGIOUS error!!!

(ASV) for he powerfully confuted the Jews, and that publicly, showing by the scriptures that Jesus was the Christ.

(BBE) For he overcame the Jews in public discussion, making clear from the holy Writings that the Christ was Jesus.

(CEV) He got into fierce arguments with the Jewish people, and in public he used the Scriptures to prove that Jesus is the Messiah.

(Darby) For he with great force convinced the Jews publicly, shewing by the scriptures that Jesus was the Christ. 

(DRB) For with much vigour he convinced the Jews openly, shewing by the scriptures that Jesus is the Christ.

(GNB) For with his strong arguments he defeated the Jews in public debates by proving from the Scriptures that Jesus is the Messiah.

(GW) In public Apollos helped them by clearly showing from the Scriptures that Jesus is the Messiah and that the Jews were wrong.

(KJV) For he mightily convinced the Jews, and that publicly, showing by the Scriptures that Jesus was Christ.
