On a bright, sunny July 3rd Saturday, the Chinese made Hanshing 6.6 Megapixels Digital Camera was taken out of the box and compared to a Japanese made Minolta Dimage 7i which had been evaluated for more than a year. A 640 x 480 section of each picture, about 5% of the total pixels, was clipped out and then expanded to 1280 x 960 so that the aliasing in each picture could be compared. Except for the difference in the colors, which can be adjusted in either camera, it was difficult to tell which picture had the crispest details. It may not be accurate to claim that the camera from Hanshing, which is 6.6 megapixels only because of their interpolation algorithm, demonstrated that much better resolution than the straight 5.1 megapixel camera from Minolta. But you would also be hard-pressed to claim that it wasn't as good, either. The ten fold difference in price, however, makes the Hanshing camera to be an incredibly good buy, even before considering its simplicity of use, attractive design, and very small size. You really don't need to carry around a camera bag and lots of accessories, but just before the test, I put it in my camera bag along with several other cameras. As has been a recurring nightmare, this is exactly the time that the strap on the camera bag decided to break, landing the bag flat on the concrete. Fortunately, the bag did its job and kept the cameras from being damaged, even the Hanshing which was at the bottom of the bag.
