"Work Injuries and
Illnesses Occurring to Women" Womens job-related injuries and fatalities are substantially below those of men, largely because of their lower proportions in high-risk industries and occupations. During the period 1992-96, women incurred 8 percent of the 32,000 job-related fatalities and about a third of the nonfatal injuries and illnesses that required time off to recuperate. However, a comparison of risk between men and women by occupation shows that women had a higher chance of a nonfatal injury in 15 of the top 20 occupations for which women reported the largest number of nonfatal injuries. As more and more women take high-risk jobs, the possibility exists that their risk of injury and death will increase. This article profiles job-related fatalities, injuries, and illnesses that occurred to women and compares them to those occurring to men during the same time period. |
