Math Even though American teachers report that they teach 99% of their students "fractions and numbers sense" (higher than the international average of 95%), 91% "measurement" (vs. international average of 86%), 92% "data representation, analysis, and probability" (vs 59%), 65% "geometry" (vs. 58%), and 98% "algebra" (vs. 88%), our 12th grade students still scored dead last in TIMSS math in 17 out of 34 subjects, and in the same range on PISA. The MOST important subject, calculus, which is taught to 94% of Japanese students and 40% of German students, isn't even mentioned in this important math study. It's estimated, though, that only 6% of American students take calculus, most likely in private schools rather than public schools. |
