The Reason I Cancelled My Newspaper
In the very same breath Stephen claims that "We would
all be better off if the politicians, particularly the Bush
administration, was [sic] forced to give more access not less access to
'the media'", he seeks to BAN the most popular mediots with slurs like
"evil journalists, like Bill O'Reilly, Sean Hannity, and
Glenn Beck".
To add insult to injury, he then implores "let's stop
taking cheap shots".
The reasons most Americans don't like these "evil
journalists" are very different than the reasons Stephen Elliott calls
them evil--they too are corruptible pawns of the jews who control the
news and are way to the left of 93% of Americans who claim to be
Christians. It's the age old good jew: bad jew comedy routine
which enables jews to keep their hold over the American people and
politics and economy.
When he writes "let's not blame the press", he
obviously excludes the most POPULAR members of his own profession who
don't even come close to the truths spoken by Jesus.
The press is the biggest scapegoat for everything that goes
wrong. I remember being in Israel at the height of the Second
Intifada and one day I'm interviewing Uzi Landau, the right wing
Minister of the Interior. It's just after the Sbarro's bombing
and Uzi is saying to me (well, really to CNN, but I was standing
next to CNN) (I'm paraphrasing here) "There is no difference
between Hamas and Fatah (an obvious lie). This is all the fault
of the lies in the New York Times. The media doesn't
want to tell the truth about these terrorists..." etc.
The next day I'm in Ramallah, on a hill overlooking the
police station. I'm standing with a Palestinian General. The
General says Israel did not warn them they were going to bomb
the police station (a lie). The General starts telling me about
all the lies in the American media, the New York Times
in particular. That's when it first occurred to me, everybody
hates the media.
So today I see Richard Morse' post is one of the biggest hits
on this site. What's the post about?
"Blame The Press." Using the same simplistic terms (I'm
sorry Richard, I know you're a cool guy) you always see. "They"
did this. "They" didn't pay any attention to that.
I know there's [sic] a lot of people that [sic] think the
media is operating as one big conspiracy. That the media is in
fact headed by one person, one ideology. But I've spent enough
time around the press, both
writing a book on the 2004 election (see chapter 4 where
Arianna puts her arm around me and I beg her to hide me in her
home) and as a political organizer with LitPAC and
Operation Ohio. (OK, I also used to work for Ralph Nader.
I'm not proud of it. You want to talk to people who hate the
media, you should get inside that campaign.) There is no media
conspiracy. Sometimes the press drops the ball, often they pay
too much attention to what the consumer wants instead of what
the consumer needs. There are certainly evil journalists, like
Bill O'Reilly, Sean Hannity, and
Glenn Beck. And if you look you'll always be able to find
something in the New York Times or Washington Post
that sounds slanted, but they're still great papers.
And here's the thing. When we beat up on the press all the
time, "the press" "them", the people we're helping the most are
in the White House. When you say "blame the press," Dick Cheney
is right there with you. And we blame the press for everything
then we forget to fight for the press.
Instead of complaining about the media, let's complain about
the lack of access the media has. We would all be better off if
the politicians, particularly the Bush administration, was
forced to give more access not less access to "the media". There
should be stricter enforcement of
sunshine laws. There should be more press conferences. We
should be on the side of the media because the media plays an
extremely important roll in our democracy.
Blogs are great too, especially
Talking
Points Memo. But usually the roll of the blogs is to echo
important findings from the "the media" or the "msm". We need
those guys, those investigative reporters, to get the ball
rolling, to uncover the truth as they often do. They'll never be
perfect, but let's stop taking cheap shots. Criticize specific
journalists when they deserve it, (Damm
you Glenn Beck) or demonstrate patterns in coverage from a
specific paper. But Let's stop with the "Blame the Press." Don't
blame the press, blame the president. Support your press. With
circulation declining they need you more than you might think.

rightwingers are insane
Why I Parted Ways With The
Right
1. Support for fascists,
both in America (see: Pat Buchanan, Robert Stacy
McCain, etc.) and in Europe (see: Vlaams Belang,
BNP, SIOE, Pat Buchanan, etc.)
2. Support for bigotry,
hatred, and white supremacism (see: Pat
Buchanan, Ann Coulter, Robert Stacy McCain, Lew
Rockwell, etc.)
3. Support for throwing
women back into
the Dark Ages, and general religious
fanaticism (see: Operation Rescue, anti-abortion
groups, James Dobson, Pat Robertson, Tony
Perkins, the entire religious right, etc.)
4. Support for
anti-science bad craziness (see: creationism,
climate change denialism, Sarah Palin, Michele
Bachmann, James Inhofe, etc.)
5. Support for homophobic
bigotry (see: Sarah Palin, Dobson, the entire
religious right, etc.)
6. Support for
anti-government lunacy (see: tea parties,
militias, Fox News, Glenn Beck, etc.)
7. Support for
conspiracy
theories and hate speech (see: Alex
Jones, Rush Limbaugh, Glenn Beck, Birthers,
creationists, climate deniers, etc.)
8. A right-wing
blogosphere that is almost universally dominated
by raging hate speech (see: Hot Air, Free
Republic, Ace of
Spades, etc.)
9. Anti-Islamic bigotry
that goes far beyond simply criticizing radical
Islam, into support for fascism, violence, and
genocide (see: Pamela Geller, Robert Spencer,
etc.)
10. Hatred for President
Obama that goes far beyond simply criticizing
his policies, into racism, hate speech, and
bizarre conspiracy theories (see: witch doctor
pictures, tea parties, Birthers, Michelle Malkin,
Fox News, World Net Daily, Newsmax, and every
other right wing source)
And much, much more. The
American right wing has gone off the rails, into
the bushes, and off the cliff.
I won’t be going over the
cliff with them.
